The Marseilles History Museum (MHM) is dedicated to the history of the town. It was founded in 1983 and was entirely renovated for Marseille-Provence European Capital of Culture in 2013. It is installed in the Centre Bourse, near to the Vieux-Port, and incorporates the remains of the archaeological site of the ancient port (Jardin des Vestiges), a permanent exhibition, a temporary exhibition space, a research library, and an auditorium, which together make it the largest museum of urban history in France.

Through its collection the history of the town is traced from antiquity to modern times, particularly its port and maritime vocation. It also houses an exceptional collection of the six wrecks of Ancient Greek and Roman date found during the Bourse and Place Jules Vernes excavations in Marseilles.
